In 1797 James Galloway, a Revolutionary War veteran and a member of General George Rogers Clark’s 1782 expedition against the Shawnee village at Old Chillicothe, moved his family from Kentucky to the Ohio Country and settled in present-day Greene County, Ohio. Tecumseh, a respected and powerful Native American leader, and Galloway developed a lasting friendship. Tecumseh gave him a tomahawk pipe and they made a Pact of Peace and Friendship. Rebekah Galloway, the bright and well-read young daughter of James and Rebekah (Junkin) Galloway, read books from her father’s library to Tecumseh. During his visits to their two-story log house, they had many discussions about these books and also events taking place on the frontier.
